Frequently Asked Questions about Graduate Orientation

Is Orientation Mandatory?

Orientation is not mandatory but it is STRONGLY recommended that you attend. There are important sessions offered that will detail your immigration status, financial services, life as a college student, career planning and employment eligibility for F-1 and J-1 visa holders, etc. We recognize that some sessions occur at the same as academic/department orientation or meetings. Academics come first, so please plan on attending your mandatory academic orientation and meetings and try to attend as many of ISSS Orientation as possible!

Why are there two Sessions?
Traditionally, Orientation begins the week before classes. However, our new graduate students are so busy during that week that they may need to miss important Orientation sessions to attend mandatory academic meetings or trainings. We want to give you more options so you can take full advantage of all the resources on campus.

How are the two Sessions different?
The presentations are the same! The main differences are the times and locations. Full schedules will be available soon. Check back often for more information!

Orientation Session 1 occurs 2 weeks before classes start. Because there are not as many events happening this week, Session 1 is mainly during the day. Social activities will also be during the day.

Orientation Session 2 occurs 1 week before classes start. Session 2 starts late afternoon and continues through early evening and occurs over 3 days. Social activities will be during the evening, usually after dinner.

The two sessions offer the same presentations so you can choose to attend one or the other, or you can mix and match according to your schedule. If you are attending the Graduate Academy for College Teaching, we recommend you attend Orientation Session 1 (August 17-18), as the dates for Orientation Session 2 might conflict with your program schedule. Please consider your department orientations and mandatory meetings before choosing your Orientation Session.

What are the social events and activities available during Orientation?
You will have many opportunities to meet your fellow new students and get advice from current students throughout Orientation! Play trivia games, go bowling and ice skating over dessert and ice cream!

Do I need to register to attend Orientation?
Registration is encouraged so presenters can best prepare their materials. However, you can join us at any time.
