F-1/J-1 Students
A requirement of maintaining F-1 or J-1 status in the US is reporting a valid address as your place of residence while in the US. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences, including the termination of your immigration status. Address updates must be made within 10 days of the change.
How to Update Your Address
F-1 Status
- Log in to iSTART.
- Click on “Biographical Information” then “F-1 US Address Update.”
- You will see the address that is currently on file with ISSS in the fillable form fields. If the information ISSS has is incorrect, use the fields to update your address.
- Once you’ve completed all required fields, click “Submit.”
Updating this information should only take a minute, but it is an important part of maintaining your status. Non-Illinois addresses, department addresses, or P.O. Boxes will not be accepted.
J-1 Status
- Log into iSTART.
- Click on “Biographical Information” then “All Other Statuses (NON-F-1) Update Contact Information.”
- You will see the address that is currently on file with ISSS in the fillable form fields. If the information ISSS has is incorrect, use the fields to update your address.
- Once you’ve completed all required fields, click “Submit.”
Updating this information should only take a minute, but it is an important part of maintaining your status. Non-Illinois addresses, department addresses, or P.O. Boxes will not be accepted.
IMPORTANT: Submitting this e-form will only update your address for ISSS and SEVIS. You MUST also update your residential and/or mailing address with the university in the university’s Self-Service System.
All Other Students
If you are a student and are NOT in J-1 or F-1 status, you must report address changes to USCIS. Please follow the instructions on USCIS’s How to Change Your Address webpage. We still recommend also updating ISSS through iSTART. Log in using your netID, then click on “Biographical Information,” then “All Other Statuses (NON-F-1) Update Contact Information.” You will be able to review the current information we have on file and make changes if necessary. If you have filled out this form recently, you can select “‘new” at the bottom of the page to make changes.
