F-1/J-1 Students
A requirement of maintaining F-1 or J-1 status in the United States is reporting a valid address as your place of residence in the United States. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences, including the termination of your immigration status. Address updates must be made within 10 days of the change.
You must also provide ISSS with your U.S. phone number once you have one, and you must update us if this changes. You should also keep your alternate, non-university email address current in our records.
How to Update Your Information
F-1 Status
- Log in to iSTART
- Click on “F-1 Student Services”
- To update your phone number or your non-University email address, select the form called “F-1 Update Contact Information”
- To update your address, select the form called “F-1 Update US Address”
- You will see the address that is currently on file with ISSS in the fillable form fields. If the information ISSS has is incorrect, enter your new address and submit the form to update your information.
Non-Illinois addresses, department addresses, or P.O. Boxes will not be accepted.
J-1 Status
- Log into iSTART
- Click on “J-1 Student Services”
- To update your phone number or your non-University email-address, select “J-1 Student Update Contact Information”
- To update your address, select “J-1 Student Update US Address”
- You will see the address that is currently on file with ISSS in the fillable form fields. If the information ISSS has is incorrect, enter your new address and submit the form to update your information.
Non-Illinois addresses, department addresses, or P.O. Boxes will not be accepted.
All Other Students
If you are an international student and are not in J-1 or F-1 status, you must report address changes to USCIS. Please follow the instructions on USCIS’s How to Change Your Address webpage. We still recommend also updating ISSS through iSTART. Log in using your NetID, then click on “Biographical Information,” then “All Other Statuses Update Contact Information.” You will be able to review the current information we have on file and make changes if necessary. If you have filled out this form recently, you can select “‘new” at the bottom of the page to make changes.
Updating your address should only take a minute and is an important part of maintaining your status.
Submitting an e-form will only update your address for ISSS and SEVIS (F-1 and J-1 status). You MUST also update your residential and/or mailing address with the university in the My UI Info (Self-Service System).
