IHC volunteer opportunities

English Classes

The teacher’s main function is to facilitate the conversation, think of topics, and help students with pronunciation and new vocabulary. They also can point out and correct common grammar mistakes. So actually, the function is less “teaching” in a formal sense, and more like making sure a class runs smoothly.

We would like to find some teachers for a class at ISSS on campus and/or at Orchard Downs. If you, or someone you know, has studied English, or has taught English before, or is quite fluent in English, this might be a good way to volunteer your time and to get involved in our local community. The people who come to our classes are very enthusiastic and motivated about practicing English, so generally these classes are a lot of fun to lead.

If you are interested in this great volunteer opportunity, please fill out the web volunteer application form or contact Vivienne Mackie (vivienne.mackie@gmail.com) who is the co-coordinator for the English classes. She would like to meet with you, chat about these classes, share ideas and materials, and discuss class times.

Friendship Groups

Participants also have the opportunity of becoming leaders of a Friendship Group. Leaders are responsible for communication to participants about upcoming meetings. They also elicit ideas from them to help set the agenda for the meetings.

If interested, please fill out the web volunteer application form or contact Paula Massey (massey46@illinois.edu)

International Friends

If you would like to help IHC with the matching of international students, scholars and their families with local individuals or families, please contact Nancy McGlathery (nmcglath@gmail.com).

Lending Storeroom

We are looking for volunteers to staff the storeroom Saturday mornings from 9am-11am.  The volunteer welcomes people, helps them to find items, and asks them to fill out a form describing what they are borrowing. Sometimes it becomes an informal English lesson, as residents ask what the names are for certain items. We have a handout with pictures and the names of kitchen utensils, as well as information about garage sales and places to buy second hand items. Volunteering is a great way to help newcomers as well as meet people from all over the world!

If you would like to consider volunteering one Saturday a month---or every 2 months---please fill out the web volunteer application form or contact the Lending Storeroom coordinator, Keach Sasamori (keachs@yahoo.com).

We are always happy to accept donated kitchen items such as rice cookers, toasters, irons, pots, pans, fans, lamps, etc.
