International Student and Scholar Services is federally required to manage and maintain international student and scholar records on behalf of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign staff may request this information for business purposes.
If you are looking for aggregated data about the university’s international population, view our annual statistics report or the Global Engagement Data Dashboard.
Data Request Policies
International Student and Scholar Services complies with all university policies related to data in the Student Code, Campus Administrative Manual, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
As a requirement of the university’s implementation of FERPA, ISSS must maintain a file of supporting material on uses made of international student and scholar data. By requesting data from ISSS, university staff agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of these policies.
Only university staff may make requests. Not all requests may be approved, and if your request cannot be approved, ISSS will provide you with an explanation.
Submitting a Request
All international student or scholar data requests must be submitted via the ISSS Data Request form. The turnaround time for report requests is 10 business days.
Consider the following when filling out the ISSS Data Request form:
- Include who will be receiving the information, if other than yourself, and their contact information for additional follow-up about completing the request.
- Individuals who are requesting data for research should forward their requests to the Division of Management Information, not ISSS.
- When providing a Report Title, please provide a brief, descriptive title for the data being requested. If the request will be a routine request, you can provide the title of the last request submitted for ease of finding previously provided material.
- Let us know how the data will be used. For example, emailing material informing individuals of a service being provided or internal campus units needing data to support services offered to their constituents.
- In “Which populations will you need information for” section, please be as descriptive as possible if selecting “Other” including selection criteria to help us in identifying the group for whom you are requesting the information (e.g., international graduate students in FAA within the Theatre program).
- If requesting a list of email addresses for the purpose of contacting individuals, we ask you to provide a sample of the communication you intend to send. The request form provides a “Browse” files option to include attachment(s) to the request. Proposed mailings/email communications to international students or scholars are subject to approval of ISSS and Global Communications.
- The date when you need the information. Please note that turnaround time will vary based on the complexity of the request. We appreciate your consideration in submitting requests well in advance of the actual need for the data.
