international student check-in and orientation
New international student Check-in takes place each Fall, Spring and Summer semester. All new international students are required to check-in at ISSS when they arrive on campus. Since ISSS has mandatory reporting responsibilities per federal regulations, Check-in allows the opportunity to fulfill these requirements as well as meet with each student one-on-one to welcome them to the University. At Check-in, students will meet with an ISSS student advisor who will review the student’s immigration documents to ensure that they entered the country in the correct status. After meeting with an ISSS advisor, students are directed to the Resource Area, where International Orientation Student Leaders are able to answer any questions students may have, and provide them with the appropriate resources from various campus units.
The ISSS Orientation is a day-long or week-long (Fall semester) orientation program designed to introduce students to the U of I campus and life in the U.S. Representatives from various campus units are invited as guest speakers to present information and answer questions. The ISSS Orientation is not mandatory but is highly recommended for all new students. Students are advised to attend any mandatory department/college orientations first.
If you are working with an international student who needs specific information about preparing to arrive in the U.S. or mandatory international student check-in requirements, please refer them to ISSS or the Check-in page.
