What happens at ISSS Check In?

As a new international student at the University of Illinois, you are required to report to the International Student and Scholar Services upon your arrival in Champaign-Urbana. Upon arrival at our office you will be able to complete your check-in procedure immediately (of course there may be some wait times during peak check-in periods). Please bring your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and I-94 (small white card in your passport) with you on the day of your appointment. Allow at least half an hour to complete the check-in process.

When You Check In

You will check in with the receptionist at the front desk. The receptionist will take your immigration documents from you and have them copied. Once your documents have been copied you will be called by an ISSS advisor to the check-in room where you will be assigned to a lap top computer. The ISSS advisor will guide you through the check-in process, answer questions, and assist you in solving any problems related to your nonimmigrant status or settling into the University of Illinois community.

Alternatively ISSS is now providing an option for new international student to accomplish the electronic check-in procedure online at remote locations. To accomplish this using your univeristy identification number please visit  http://www.illinois.edu/goto/checkin.  Once you have completed the electronic check-in you will still need to report to our office to have your immigration documents copied.

After your file is complete, the advisor or a trained volunteer will review a checklist of important procedures with you. The checklist provides detailed instructions on the many things that you may need to do as a new student at the University of Illinois. Some of those items include:

- Applying for a Social Security Number.
- Applying for a student identification card (I-Card).
- Obtaining your computer network ID and password.
- Arranging your schedule with your academic advisor.
- Scheduling an English Placement Test if your notice of admission indicates that you are required to take one.
- Registering for classes using Banner.
- Obtaining a tuberculin screening and updating your immunizations as required by Illinois law.
- Attending the ISSS orientation program.
- And others!

Your check-in advisor will also provide you with information on various aspects of student life and paper copies of some of our ISSS publications.

In some instances, we will have a special resource area staffed with volunteers who can assist you in finding housing in Champaign-Urbana.
